They suggest seven steps to control an argument in officiating:
1. Let the other person talk and do not interrupt
2. Using your own words, repeat the problem back to the coach or player (this is a technique taught in counseling called rephrasing)
3. Do not debate judgment calls, as the evidence often depends on the angle of the view of the observer.
4. Limit discussion to the most recent call. The past is history.
5. Remain assertive and decisive. The person needs to know your tolerance level.
6. Do not engage in any discussion when you are very angry. First regain your composure.
7. When discussing problems, focus on solutions.
